Dietrich Hovestadt Interview

Below you will find raw interviews with some of George Gloeckler’s closest Friends and colleagues. These interviews were filmed in the making of George’s memoir. These videos are full length interviews and provide insight to George Gloeckler’s spectacular career with NASA. There is tons of fascinating material here!

Dietrich Hovestadt Part 1

Dietrich Hovestadt talks about his background and the beginning of his career in physics and how he met George Gloeckler

Dietrich Hovestadt Part 2

Dietrich Hovestadt started working with George Gloeckler in 1969.   The two started working on IMP 7 and 8 and quickly realized that their collaboration was going to be successful for years to come. They both studied low energy particles and that turned out to be important because no one else was making these measurements.

Dietrich Hovestadt Part 3

Dietrich Hovestadt talks about a fairing that they used during one of the launches. This was a special memory because they used fishing tackle to hold the fairing in place during the launch. This, of course, would never happen today, but that is what made the times so great.

Dietrich Hovestadt Part 4

Dietrich Hovestadt speaks about how he and George were lucky, in many ways, to get their measurements. Timing was everything when it came to the solar minimum and solar maximum. If they measured at the wrong time they may not have achieved the successful results they were looking for.

Dietrich Hovestadt Part 5

Dietrich Hovestadt looks back at ISEE, ICE and AMPTE. He recalls that George and he were able to get two proposals accepted on two simultaneous flights. AMPTE as it turns out was the first successful time of flight measurement and it worked for 4 years!

Dietrich Hovestadt Part 6

Dietrich Hovestadt answers questions about the state of space science in the present as well as the past.

Dietrich Hovestadt Part 7

Dietrich Hovestadt talks about where he believes Voyager is now, as well as fun facts about SOHO and WIND

Dietrich Hovestadt Part 8

Dietrich Hovestadt gives insight as to how the space physics field is close knit. He also talks about the many accomplishments of his colleague, George Gloeckler.
